HOW TO: GET SUKI WATERHOUSE’S SIXTIES-SEXY LOOK
There is so much about this look that ticks all our beauty boxes. The cute, side-sweeping fringe, bold bushybrows, feline-ish flicks of liner, bright under-eyes, flushed cheeks and petal-pink lips … We just never thought to put them all together before! But somehow – at least if you’re name is Suki Waterhouse, the British it-model – it all comes together gorgeously…Let’s break it down …
1. The Fringe: Bangs may be everywhere right now, but that’s not to say they’re the easiest things to get right. You need a stylist who really gets them, so ask any fabulously-fringed friends for their hairdresser recommendations. Then, you need to be spot-on specific about what you want. Ask for a slightly choppy fringe, cut wide enough to open your face and make your cheekbones pop, but not too deep (you don’t want to go too heavy or you’ll have very few styling options). Once you have your cut in place, the rest is in the styling: to get this side-swept look, dry your fringe to the opposite direction (it will fall back in place – believe us), using a bristle brush on top of hair and always pointing the hairdryer downwards.
2. The Brows: Again, this story starts in the salon, with a good shaping and, if necessary, a dark tint. From here, you can keep them groomed and glossed with a brow wax, such as MAC Brow Finisher, $31.
3. The Eyes: We won’t lie. This type of liner is filed under ‘practice-makes-perfect’. An easy way to start, however, is by using a cake liner together with a stiff angled brush, as this tends to give better control over the effect. TryClinique Eye Definer Brush, $33, and Napoleon Perdis Cake Eyeliner in Black. $25. Once you’ve got that particular wrist-action sorted, try experimenting with a liquid liner wand or pen for an even sleeker look; tryMaybelline Master PreciseLiquid Eyeliner, $13.95.
4. The Under-Eyes: Concealing dark circles this well is all about a double act. First, use a pigment-dense concealer to strike out any darkness – Bobbi Brown Creamy Concealer, $46, is brilliant for this. And then go back in with an illuminating concealer to add lightness and luminosity; YSL Touche Eclat, $55, is still one of the best.
5. The Cheeks: Suki’s soft glow is this kind of blush you wish you had naturally.
The genius of this blush is that – thanks to the swirl of colours that blend together on your brush – it’s the perfect balance of warm and cool. It gives the face a healthy glow, yet there’s enough pink in there to keep it girlie. Although if you have darker skin, you may need to upgrade to a more heavily pigmented pink blush for an oomphier effect.
6. The Lips: This photo had us digging out our beloved YSL Rouge Volupté in Lingerie Pink, $55, a creamy lippie that is just about the most perfect cool baby-pink hue on the market. Plus its pigment density means you don’t have to first layer on concealer to tone down your natural lip colour. It’s a splurge, sure, but one that we promise is totally worth it.
